Windermere is a small town in the southern Lake district area. Lake Windermere is only a short walk away from the town centre which has all of the amenties you would want from a visit to the area. There is often confusion with 'Bowness-on-Windermere' which sits right next to the Lake, and as the population has grown, the two small towns have merged in the middle. In fact, if you look back in history, Windermere was actually three small hamlets [Applethwaite, Birththwaite and Heathwaite] which were combined in the 1800's when there was a greater attempt to encourage people to visit the area.

The railway arrived in 1857, making the area much more accessible to visitors. The railway still exists and brings people from all over the world to this special area.

Lake Windermere is well known as England's largest Lake at over 10 miles long and is also the deepest at 65 metres. There are numerous outstanding viewing points within easy reach either by car, or by short walk.

Hillthwaite looks down not only on Windermere and Bowness-on-Windermere, but also on Lake Windermere! To top that, there are the fabulous views of the Lakeland Fells [mountains] across the lake. While not everyone gets to stay in a Lake View room [book early!], all our guests at our hotel in Windermere can admire the view from our restaurant and terrace. Have some coffee, sit with a book, get the camera out or simply sit and take it all in.
